Two New York State Parks on the Island are slated to get Cabins and Cottages as Camping on Long Island surges in popularity.
Construction on 10 Cabins to be located at the Wildwood State Park will begin in Spring of 2010, with the estimated completion date to be ready for the 2018 season. The cabins will feature both one and two bedroom’s as well as a bathroom, kitchenette, screened outdoor porch and furnishings.
For Hechscher State Park however, the full-service cottages are expected to begin construction in 2018, and be readily available from Spring to Fall each yeah.
State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey has said that “These new cabins and cottages [will] offer more choices to enjoy a unique experience in our Long Island State Parks” and that “High quality overnight lodging will provide visitors with a hub to visit the region’s beaches, wineries, and cultural destinations – and help to continue to grow Long Island’s tourism economy.”
“The new cabins are among many new improvements taking place across the New York State Park system – thanks to Governor Cuomo’s leadership,” Commissioner Harvey said. “Cabins and cottages have long been a popular offering at our Parks statewide, but they have never before been available on Long Island. We expect these cabins and cottages to dramatically enhance the appeal of Wildwood and Heckscher State Parks to vacationers looking to experience all that Long Island has to offer.”
The project will cost $6 million, and will be funded by Governor Cuomo’s NY Parks 2020 initiative. NY Parks 2020 is a multi-year commitment to leverage $900 million in private and public funding for New York State Parks from 2011 through 2020. The 2016-17 state budget had already included $90 million for this initiative this article.
With any luck New York State will look into building some Cabins at the Montauk Camp Hero State Park as well as other parks that could use some TLC.
