Although only 1.9 acres, Marratooka South Preserve is a significant open space holding for the Town of Southold. While much of the parcel features wetlands, the uplands portion is home to a thriving prickly pear cactus population (an NYS-designated exploitably vulnerable species). The prickly pear cactus is the only cactus native to New York. The Preserve also provides access to Marratooka Lake and is a great birding hotspot during the winter.
The park is located on the south side of Main Road in Mattituck, just past Reeve Avenue, which has been preserved for open space and scenic use. Winter ice skating, weather permitting, accounts for its most active use.
