The Charles. P. Toner Park is located in the Nesconset Hamlet in Smithtown and was named after former Park Director Charles. P. Toner. The park is situated on the grounds of a former NYS Armory that is now used as a Library. Visitors must be residents of Smithtown and display a resident parking sticker.
Charles P. Toner is a retired director of the Parks department for Smithtown and had dedicated 27 years to enriching Smithtown Parks and Beaches along with their expansion, earning him the nickname “Buster”
The Armory that the library and park now encompasses was eventually closed in 1991 and was sold to Town of Smithtown in 1992 for $1 under the stipulation that the armory and grounds be used for recreational purposes. It sat vacant until 2010. During its time being abandoned, the armory was used by teenagers for indoor skating before being renovated in 2011.
During its Tenure as an Armory it served the 587th Transportation Squadron (from 1961 – ????) and the Support, 71st Infantry (1986 – ????)
