In 1906, the Army Corps of Engineers placed giant rocks on both sides of the Mattituck Inlet. Over the decades, tidal transport has created a large, wonderful beach on the west side of the jetty at Breakwater on the Long Island Sound.
During the summer season, the beach has lifeguards on duty, as well as restrooms and an outdoor shower. A beach wheelchair is available for disabled patrons. There is a small assortment of playground attractions for children. The “rocks” are popular with fishers.
Breakwater Beach has a pavilion with picnic tables and is also the home to the MPD’s volleyball courts.
The beach is popular all year round with residents and guests who come to watch the stunning, unforgettable, and ever-changing sunsets.
The beaches of the Mattituck Park District are private beaches for the residents of Mattituck and Laurel. During the beach season, you must have a current year Parking Permit to enter the parking lot. Non-resident walk-ons are not permitted. We are pleased to announce that we now accept credit card payment for all Parking Permits which are available online and in the office (Mon-Fri from 9.30-3.00; Thursdays until 5.00 PM). The permits are removable decals, which will be mounted inside the vehicle, on any driver-side window.
Starting Memorial Day Weekend, residential permits will also be available at the entrance gate at Veterans Beach during beach hours (credit card only). To speed the process at the gate, we ask that residents possessing either a Mattituck-Laurel license or registration purchase at the booth; those with tax bills, deeds or leases, checks or cash, please come into the office. The cost is $25 per vehicle:
